This will by far be the most tedious and time consuming of all your summer projects, so we decided to put this one at the top of the list - after all, it's still very important! This will be the job that makes the biggest difference in the look of your home this summer, and you'll want to get this done while the weather is warm, because doing it in the freezing cold isn't fun! Visit the
paints & stains
department in our store for help on choosing your colors. Make sure the colors you're painting your doors and shutters will match the primary color that you're putting on the house! Before starting though, you MUST make sure whichever kind of siding your home has is actually paintable! Paint will actually ruin certain types of siding (for instance, vinyl siding) so make sure you do your research first!
2. Check and clean your air ducts!
The health and wellbeing of your family is of course more important than any of these, but this task should be a lot less time-consuming! This is because cleaning these can be done very quickly and easily by a local air duct cleaning company, and there are so many out there that these services are now easily affordable on almost any budget! Give your air ducts a look-over with a flashlight; if they look dirty call your local air duct cleaner! If you can't tell if it's time to give them a cleaning, most of these company's will offer a free consultation anyway.
3. Check around the outside of your house for any unsealed cracks around your windows, doors, and any exposed parts of your foundation!
One of the most important routine-maintenance tasks there is is to make sure any cracks around the outside of your house are sealed up. This is important for a bunch of reasons, but once most people hear that sealing any cracks outdoors around their windows and door frames is actually going to save them a bunch of money on their energy bills, any cracks around their home get sealed immediately! And it's true - believe it or not, (especially in the winter time) the treated air in your house is always slowly leaking out of these small cracks! Sealing them up will immediately fix the problem though, and it'll save you money on your energy bill! Sealing cracks that are appearing on any exposed parts of your foundation though are far more important and need to be sealed IMMEDIATELY. Failure to seal these cracks as soon as they appear could make the problem far worse... and an easily fixable problem could become a far more expensive nightmare! Ask our staff here at Kefauver True Value Lumber
about what products you'll need to get these cracks sealed up.
4. Get all the leaves out of your gutters!
This one should have actually been done right after the last fall season... but we know that almost everyone seems to neglect their gutters these days until it's too late. You'll want to take care of this one before the weather cools down... and you won't want to wait another year because your gutters are getting filled to the brim wi leaves, guaranteed! As long as you have a sturdy latter and a little bit of free time on a Saturday, almost everyone should be able to "DIY" this one. This is another one of the most-important parts of routine maintenance you do for your home. For those of you that may have found a cracked foundation in Tip #3, Tip #4 will prevent that from happening again! Cleaning out your gutters now instead of waiting another year will also help protect your roof and prevent water damage!
5. Make sure you empty your dehumidifier at the end of the summer!
